The heart of the play is the story of the platonic four year love affair he has with Nancy McLehose, married (although separated) and a poet. They corresponded throughout the course of the affair, using pseudonyms - Clarinda and Sylvander - to conceal their identities and prevent scandal in case the letters were intercepted.   Like macabre editions of Robert Burns and Agnes Maclehose in the winter of , scribbling to each other four times a day in the pastoral characters of "Sylvander" and "Clarinda.

The two soon decided to use "Arcadian names" as Burns called them: she was Clarinda, he Sylvander. Marriage turned out to be impossible, and the correspondence dwindled once Burns left Edinburgh.
